13.0 th..Post…..PHOTO COMPARISON

This POST is for those readers that are comparing Leonardo’s apostles with that of Eakins’ apostles.

These two paintings are proportionally identical. However, when I photographed each painting I must have inadvertently nudged the camera slightly. I did not notice the results at the time. I just now became aware of the difference. Or it might have occurred in a photo shop program.

This nudging or whatever caused the pictures to be approximately 3/16″ difference in size and affects the comparative view as follows:

If you left click either picture, it will enlarge. Holding the left click the viewer can drag either picture and overlap it upon the other. Still holding the left click one can line up both pictures. However, the 3/16″ nudge will cause a shadow to be cast by either one or the other pictures. Still holding the left click line up the fingers of Jesus and you will see a shadow above His head. That is the 3/16″ nudge. If the viewer lines up the head, the fingers will then have a shadow. This shadow will occur at every comparative view. Although I am not sure that all browsers perform the same. However, the shadow as I call it, is not really a shadow but an overlay that did not quite line up. My fault. I think.

I know that Eakins’ painting is precise, since I previously checked it thoroughly with dividers.

In the very near future I plan to check my photo shop program or to
re-photograph both pictures eliminating this difference. The change will be seamless, I hope.

ADDENDUM: (Aug 30, 2011) About 6 weeks ago I posted the above statement. I have manually re-checked the scale and I assure the you that the scale between the two paintings is exact. I have adjusted the scale of the pictures and everything is now precise. Therefore you can click either Leonardo’s of Eakins apostle, hold the click and drag it over the other. You can see that it is a puzzle like fit.

Thomas Eakins traced and painted Leonardo’s, The Last Supper.

Thomas Eakins was clever. More on this later.
