This is the first posting and I would like to give you, our readers, an overview of the direction and purpose of this website. The main character is Thomas Eakins, followed by his circle of friends.

I have been researching a painting for four years. However, it was somewhat casual and I never fully documented everything. There were many things that I know I missed. Therefore, I will retrace my steps, taking you with me. Together, we can rediscover the old and discover the new. All rediscoveries and new discoveries will be posted in installment phases on a regular basis. If I have your e-mail address, I will immediately notify you at every new posting.

If I make a mistake, give me a comment. If I take the wrong path, give me a comment. If you have a question, give me a comment. With your help we can complete this journey as we unveil, one of America’s most important paintings:

The Last Supper

by Thomas Eakins

Now, lets go, we are on our way !

Thomas Eakins is believed to be the finest American Realist Painter of the 19th century. The last decade of the 19th century was nearing the  latter part of his life.

During this period he suffered bouts of depression. Reviewing his life and accomplishments he felt he was not where he should have been. Although, he kept busy, he completed some canvases, did displayed at major exhibits and assisted in some major sculpturing for public works. Yet he was not accomplishing what he sought, some personal positive recognition.

1896:

Thomas Eakins mounted a solo Exhibit at the Earle Gallery in Philadelphia. At the exhibit he displayed 29 canvases. No canvas was sold. Those with his signature were shunned. He never again held a solo exhibit. This failure aggravated his bouts of depression. He was devastated.

1898:

Thomas Eakins had an epiphany.

Upon the 400th anniversary of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Leonardo was believed to be the finest painter of the High Renaissance period. Thomas Eakins decided to pay homage to Leonardo’s painting by substantially replicating it, yet still creating his own version of this Biblical imagery. Eakins’ version of The Last Supper, is painted on a smaller scale than Leonardo’s massive 15’ x 30’ work yet it is proportionately perfect. At this point in his life, he must have felt uplifted.

The epiphany continued:

In an act of creative spontaneity and after having completed an exact copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s,  The Last Supper, he, Thomas Eakins changed the profile of six apostles. Rather than creating a pure copy of Leonardo’s work, he used his own image and the images of others within his circle of friends, as Apostles. In seeing his completed work he must have stood and viewed it in total awe.
