2.1 nd Post: ………..Good Friday-Launch Day

Addendum: This post is a little off the targeted subject but it is somewhat related.  Again I am a little behind on my postings, I just wasn’t feeling OK.  My wife Kathleen insisted that I get a weeks’ rest.  We went away for 10 days.  We drove down south, visited some friends and then spent some time in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  It was relaxing.  While there we visited Kitty Hawk.  It was enlightening to say the least. While a child I always remember hearing/reading about the Wright Brothers(Orville & Wilbur) building a plane and being the first to fly.  I know now  that it was not quite that way.  They lived in Dayton, Ohio and would travel to Kitty Hawk because of the sandy unobstructed beaches (soft landing), constant steady winds, and privacy. They initially  built a glider and from Kill Devil Hills made over 1000 trials flights, attempting to both glide and  control the glide.  After believing they understood the method of control they then built a larger glider and in addition  built an engine to their requirements.  They had also built the first wind tunnel which enabled them to determine the correct wing design giving them the needed lift.  There at the base (flat area) of Kill Devil Hills, on Dec.17, 1903 the Wright Brothers made 4 separate flights.  The first flight was about 120 feet and the fourth flight was 852 feet. That day the aviation industry was born.

Also a nice event was at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.  There we  found the Waterside Theater (outdoor) seating for about 1500 people.  Over 100 actors participate in producing The Lost Colony a drama about the disappearance of 150 settlers.  Well worth seeing.  It was great. Our trip was fantastic, I’m feeling better and I’m back on the job.
