1967: I had just leased a new apartment and was decorating same. One of my brothers mentioned that there was a painting in a used furniture store in a historical section of Philadelphia, known as Germantown, that might interest me. Always browsing, I went to the store. While talking to the storekeeper, he informed me that the painting I was looking at came from the same house as the painting my brother had mentioned. As I remember the price was $35, which seemed fair. I purchased it and the painting hung on my wall for a few years. The dust cover of the painting was deteriorating but it had an inscription on it and I covered it with plastic to keep it intact. A few years later I married, moved to another apartment, and redecorated.
It was later learned that the painting that my brother mentioned was a portrait of George Washington which was done by Peal. Peal did some of his most memorable work just four blocks from the furniture store location.
Having redecorated I moved the painting to the home of my parents, they were religious, they took pleasure in having it on the wall and the fact that I had thought of them. In 1976 on the eve of thanksgiving my father suddenly died. Around 1980 my mother downsized and moved in with my sister. At that time she returned my painting to me. She told me that she just wanted to be sure that I got it back. Mom was a very sweet and lovely woman.
After having the painting returned to me I took it apart. The dust cover was brittle but I saved all that I could. I removed the matting and the painting from the frame. I wanted to see if there was any signature or whatever written on the back. To me at that time, I saw nothing of importance. Although, due to its fragility, I didn’t wish to reassemble eveything. The dust cover was too brittle and I would lose it. If I packaged it separately something would get lost. I therefore placed everything in a box and slid it under my bed. I examined it occasionally. I can remember one time viewing it under magnification. I was amazed to see a finger nail on one of the apostles. It was so small that I couldn’t see it without 10x magnification. Realizing that parts of the painting had to be done under magnification with only one bristle in the brush, I more than ever felt it to be a good painting but I still had no idea as to the artist.
