2007: About this point in time newspaper articles started to appear stating that Thomas Jefferson University was interested in selling their most famous painting The Gross Clinic. In my readings I soon came across a picture of Thomas Eakins. This was very exciting, I thought he even looked similar to one of the apostles. Back to the box. Out with the painting. I could hardly believe what I saw. He looked exactly like one of the apostles. I thought it to be just a coincidence. It just did not occur to me that there was more to come. I had previously acquired a printed picture of Leonardo’s The Last Supper which I quickly retrieved. In comparing the two works I could immediately see the difference. The profile of one of the apostles was changed. Thomas Eakins profile was now on that of an apostle.
I later visited the homestead of Thomas Eakins, originally the home of his father, B. Eakins. His fathers name was Benjamin Eakins but he liked to sign his name B. Eakins. The home is at 1730 Mt. Vernon Street, Phila. It is now historical. I toured the building and even Eakins studio. I actually thought that I might find it in pretty much the same condition as Eakins had left it last. But it had been updated slightly, no old canvases or paint around. I walked the side yard on the same bricks that I had seen in several photos of his home. It was unchanged. It was a good feeling. I felt as if I was getting to know him.
Some of Eakins paintings were quite large and from the uppermost floor of his home he could not possibly get those paintings down the stairs. To solve this problem, he cut an opening into the side of the wall (slate and wood, etc.), sort of like a huge vertical oversize mail slot. I looked for the cutout in the wall of his studio but it no longer was visible. Just a point of interest.
I still had not grasped the full extent of the changes. I read additional material and compared until I discovered what I think are all the changes, I hope. I could now see that Thomas Eakins and five of his circle of friends were depicted as apostles. And they are all identifiable.
I also grasped the immense job of putting this important puzzle together.
