What can be said about Jesus that has not already been said. What can be said about Jesus that has not been rehashed. I have read and I write not for that purpose but to just try to glimpse what Leonardo might have seen or heard when he reached the point of painting the profile of Jesus. As I touched onto the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John I learned that these books were written 50 to 100 years after the fact. That they were based on oral history. There were no eyewitness accounts and that the ministry of Jesus lasted only about 3 years. Although, there is no question in my mind that there was a historical Jesus who was crucified and who died on the cross. However, I am left wondering just what were His physical features.

I have read of and seen a picture of a sketch of Jesus that was found in the Christian catacombs. I must assume that there were many sketches made over the years. The one I saw looked much like what Leonardo painted in his picture. He must have seen similar sketches in the cities. He must have talked to people in the towns to hear their version. In addition there were other paintings and frescos in the general area that Leonardo must have known of and seen. Especially the fresco by Andrea del Castagno located in the convent of Sant’ Apollonia at Florence.
More importantly on the subject, I am sure that he had many conversations with his patron and benefactor the Duke of Milan, Lodovico Sforza who commissioned the painting. In addition there were other religious personages in and out of the refectory and we can be sure they expressed their opinion.
Regardless, of how Leonardo reached his final decision for the facial features of Jesus, he labored long and hard over these features and his decision.
Jesus’ was the last profile that Leonardo painted in his world famous painting The Last Supper.
This can be attested to by an eye witness by the name of….
